Professor Dissou Affolabi, senior researcher at the Reference Laboratory for Mycobacteria in Cotonou, Benin, is part of the global effort to combat antibiotic resistance.

In collaboration with the Belgian Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) in Antwerp, professor Affolabi’s team studies bacterial infections and antibiotic resistance. They also install and train other diagnostic laboratories in Benin to identify bacterial infections and antibiotics resistance.

Using these identification tests, doctors can prescribe antibiotics more efficiently, thus helping to combat infections and antimicrobial resistance at a larger scale. This scientific collaboration between Belgium and Benin is supported by the Belgian Development Cooperation.
