Bacteriology

In August 2023, Jens Cornelis started his PhD at the Institute for Tropical Medicine in Antwerp (ITM) and Ghent University (UGent). Jens’ work will be part of both the SIMBLE project and the newly started ENERGISE project. During his PhD he will work mainly on the turbidimeter, a diagnostic device for detecting bloodstream infections developed by ITM and UGent.

His aim will be to improve it’s detection capabilities, which are currently based on optical turbidity measurements. For certain organism this way of growth monitoring does not suffice, so he will be investigating additional methods for detecting growth inside the blood cultures. This could allow the turbidimeter to detect more species faster. He will also try to identify which organism is growing inside the blood culture with the help of machine learning.
