Workshop on Antimicrobial Resistance in Siglé, Burkina Faso

Palpouguini Lompo, a research partner of the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp (ITM), and his team at the Clinical Research Unit of Nanoro (CRUN) Burkina Faso, organized a workshop and training antimicrobial resistance (AMR), blood cultures and Infection Prevention and Control (IPC). It took place from the 7^th to the 10^th of April 2026 in Siglé, Burkina Faso. In total 36 attendees took part from a wide variety of backgrounds including doctors, nurses, midwifes and laboratory staff.

The training was organized in preparation for the start of blood culture sampling and laboratory processing of blood cultures in the commune of Siglé. The first two days included presentations on AMR, indications for blood culture sampling and IPC. Practical sessions included hand hygiene and blood culture sampling using phantom arms. The last two days focused on laboratory staff, with practical sessions provided on processing blood culture bottles, reading bacterial cultures and performing antimicrobial susceptibility testing.

AMR surveillance in Nanoro is supported by ITM, particularly the Unit of Tropical Bacteriology.
